Autologous Transfusion:

This means using your own blood for a blood transfusion during an operation. Your own blood is collected, stored and given back to you when you need it. This is called autologous blood.

Advantages:

For the patient:
No risk of transmission of disease e.g. Hepatitis, Syphilis, Cytomegalovirus and other viruses including AIDS.
No risk of incompatibility to another person’s blood.
No risk of immunization of red blood cell, white blood cell, platelet or protein antigens.

For the surgeon:
Ready availability of blood for patients for whom compatible blood is not easily available.
Less dependence on the Blood Bank’s fluctuation in blood supply.
Reduction of the amount of homologous blood given in a procedure.

Procedure:

For patients with planned elective surgical procedures, we do a pre-surgical donation and storage.
Blood is withdrawn well before the expected transfusion and stored until use.
The last donation should be made at least 72 hours before surgery.
The number of units stored will be in accordance with the type of operation and the doctor’s request.

Criteria for Donor Selection:
