Our Osteoporosis Clinic offers diagnostic and clinical services with comprehensive assessment and care for patients with osteoporosis. This includes education about lifestyle changes and medical therapies to improve bone health. The clinic also helps people with low bone mass to manage their disease, focus on reducing their risk of fractures and improve their quality of life. Our team comprises specialists with expertise in osteoporosis as well as a dietitian, physiotherapist and a trained nurse.
The clinic offers non-invasive medical tests that provide information on bone health, including Bone Mineral Density (BMD) tests, also known as dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans. These are X-rays which use very small amounts of radiation to determine the bone density of the spine, hip, or wrist. BMD scans usually take approximately 10–15 minutes and are currently the gold standard in osteoporosis tests.
Post-menopausal women are especially at risk of getting osteoporosis, as are younger patients with complex medical conditions e.g. transplant, renal, diabetic and cancer patients; and individuals on steroids, which places them at greater risk for bone loss and fractures. All women over the age of 65 and men over 70 should do a bone density test. A DXA scan should also be carried out earlier for men and women with osteoporosis risk factors.
